Today, it’s a nice, cloudy Sunday afternoon where I’m located, and there’s nothing better than writing a blog with a large iced pumpkin spice latte from a local coffee shop.
Today, we’re going to talk about what I believe is the best division in hockey!
Statistically, over the last couple of years, the Central Division has been one of the strongest divisions in the National Hockey League. Today, we’re going to rank these teams based on where I think they will finish in the standings.
Colorado Avalanche Pts 114
The Colorado Avalanche are one of the most complete teams in the NHL. With former MVP Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, one of the highest-paid defensemen in NHL history, this team is loaded with talent and continues to get better.
They were stunned last year in the Western Conference Finals against the Vegas Golden Knights. I think they have a lot to prove this season. Last year’s ending was unfortunate, but I expect the Presidents’ Trophy-winning team to be right back in the mix this year.
My biggest concern is their goaltending situation. It’s nothing personal against their goalies; I just don’t think Mackenzie Blackwood is an elite, everyday goaltender who can consistently carry a team through the postseason. That could set Colorado back a little bit.
Still, I expect Blackwood to win 30-plus games this year because he is a very good goaltender. With the talent Colorado has in front of him, this team should once again be a serious contender.
Dallas Stars Pts 109
The Dallas Stars are off to a winless start through their first two games, but I think that, when it’s all said and done, this team is going to be one of the top teams in the National Hockey League.
They are simply so talented. Keeping Jason Robertson for at least another year is huge, and pairing him with Mikko Rantanen, Wyatt Johnston, and one of the best goaltenders in the league in Jake Oettinger gives Dallas a roster that can compete with anyone.
I think this team is complete and ready to make another run at the Stanley Cup.
The Stars have been knocking on the door for a while now. The question is whether this is the year they finally get over the hump.
Minnesota Wild Pts 106
The Central Division is so stacked that the Minnesota Wild are projected to finish third. That should tell you everything you need to know about the level of competition in this division.
Just like Colorado and Dallas, Minnesota has one of the most complete teams in the league. They have one of the best defensemen in the NHL in Quinn Hughes, while Kirill Kaprizov is one of the most dangerous forwards in hockey.
The one thing that could hurt them is the loss of Brock Faber. Unfortunately, he suffered a fractured skull before the season and had to undergo surgery. Hopefully, he can make a full recovery and return to the ice when he is ready. It’s an unfortunate situation for both Faber and the Minnesota organization.
The Wild have all the pieces to make a deep run in the Western Conference. Unfortunately, if they finish second or third, they could have a difficult first-round matchup against another Central Division powerhouse.
That’s just how competitive this division is.
Utah Mammoth Pts 98
I’m really high on this team.
I think the Utah Mammoth are one of the best young teams in the league, with Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, and Dylan Guenther leading the way.
They made the playoffs last season for the first time in franchise history, eventually losing to the Vegas Golden Knights. But this is a young team that gained a ton of valuable experience, and that should only help them moving forward.
Just like with a few other teams in this division, the one thing I’m questioning is their goaltending situation.
Do they have an elite No. 1 option who can take them to the next level?
We will see.
I really like the direction this organization is heading, and I think Utah could surprise a lot of people this season.
St. Louis Blues Pts 90
I think the St. Louis Blues are going to have a good year.
They might not be the most talented team in the division, but I really like their structure and the direction they are heading. They have young talent in players like Robert Thomas, Jimmy Snuggerud, and Dylan Holloway, along with young goaltender Joel Hofer.
I think this team can prove to a lot of people that it can find success in the NHL.
The young players are going to need to step up if St. Louis wants to compete in a division this talented. They cannot afford to rely solely on their veterans if they want to make a serious push toward the playoffs.
Ultimately, I think the Blues have the pieces to put together a solid season. Whether they have enough to compete with the top teams in the Central remains to be seen.
Nashville Predators Pts 86
The Nashville Predators are an intriguing team.
At times, they have looked fine, but there is still a bigger question surrounding this organization: What is its direction?
With new general manager Chris McFarland, who previously served as an assistant general manager in Colorado, the Predators need to establish an identity and figure out what kind of team they want to become.
With the trade of Luke Evangelista to the New Jersey Devils, I’m not entirely sure what the long-term plan is. However, they still have veterans who can make an impact, including Steven Stamkos and Filip Forsberg.
The defense is another area worth watching. Nashville needs its younger players to step up and become a bigger part of the team’s future.
I think the Predators have some pieces to work with, but they need to figure out their identity before they can seriously compete with the best teams in the West.
Chicago Blackhawks Pts 83
Listen, I think it’s going to be a long season for the Chicago Blackhawks.
But on the bright side, they have one of the best young players in the league in Connor Bedard.
If Chicago can continue building around him and start making the right moves, this Original Six franchise should be competing again in the next couple of years.
The Blackhawks have had some high draft picks following some difficult seasons, and now the focus needs to shift toward turning that young talent into a winning team.
The return of Patrick Kane is another exciting storyline for the city of Chicago. Kane is one of the greatest American-born players in hockey history, and he can teach these young players a lot about what it takes to become a successful professional.
Chicago also made a big move by acquiring defenseman Bowen Byram from the Buffalo Sabres. That is a significant addition, but we will have to wait and see how it works out in the Windy City.
At the end of the day, hockey is just better when Chicago is good.
What’s Next for Sports and Coffee?
Next in my series will be the Pacific Division. There are plenty of good teams in that division, and I’m looking forward to breaking down the biggest storylines and sharing my projections.
