Sorry it’s been a little bit since I’ve posted, but tonight we have our fourth and final division projection: the Western Conference’s Pacific Division!
The last three Stanley Cup champions have all been represented by a Pacific Division team in their journey to the Cup. So, let’s see how these teams stack up heading into the season!
☕ Today’s Latte of Choice: An iced vanilla latte with caramel drizzle.
Edmonton Oilers Pts 109
Once again, I really like the Edmonton Oilers. They have two of the best players on the planet in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. With those two leading the way, Edmonton is always going to have a chance to compete.
The biggest question, as it seems to be every year, is who will be their goaltender on any given night? Goaltending has been a major concern for this team over the past few seasons, and it continues to be an area they need to address.
If Edmonton can find consistent play between the pipes, this team has the offensive firepower to compete with anybody in the league.
Vegas Golden Knights Pts 103
Just a year removed from a trip to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Vegas Golden Knights are looking to establish themselves as a force in the Western Conference once again.
This team has plenty of offensive firepower, led by Jack Eichel, who is one of the best players in the NHL, He can do just about everything you need from a superstar forward. On the blue line, Noah Hanifin is an important piece of the defensive group.
If Vegas can stay healthy and find consistent goaltending, I believe they have a legitimate chance to win the Pacific Division.
Anaheim Ducks Pts 98
The Anaheim Ducks certainly had an eventful offseason, especially with all the contract negotiations surrounding Leo Carlsson. He eventually signed an $18 million-per-season deal, which at the time was reported as the richest contract in NHL history.
Beyond Carlsson, this is a talented young team with players like Cutter Gauthier and Beckett Sennecke, who has the potential to become an important piece of Anaheim’s future.
Like so many teams in this division, the biggest question mark is goaltending. Will the Ducks get enough consistent play in net to keep pace with the teams ahead of them?
The young talent is there, but how quickly this team develops could determine where it finishes in the standings.
Los Angeles Kings Pts 97
I’m a believer in this Los Angeles Kings team. I think they have the potential to do some real damage in the Western Conference.
With the addition of Artemi Panarin, along with Drew Doughty, Kevin Fiala returning from injury, and Brandt Clarke continuing to develop, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about this group.
I’m also a big believer in Darcy Kuemper. I think he has the potential to return to being one of the league’s top goaltenders.
What I really want to see from Los Angeles is more consistent scoring. If they can generate enough offense to complement their defensive play and goaltending, I think they have a real shot at leapfrogging Anaheim in the division.
San Jose Sharks Pts 90
The San Jose Sharks are another intriguing young team, with much of their core still under the age of 23.
Macklin Celebrini is already establishing himself as one of the league’s best young players. He’s a superstar talent with the potential to become one of the faces of the NHL for years to come. His teammate and close friend Will Smith is another player I’m watching closely.
Adding veteran presence, including Darnell Nurse, could be important for a young team trying to take the next step.
I’m not sure the Sharks are ready to compete for the division just yet, but their young core makes them one of the more exciting teams to watch as they continue to build for the future.
Seattle Kraken Pts 86
The Seattle Kraken are a difficult team to evaluate because, on paper, they have plenty of talent. They also have a quality starting goaltender in Joey Daccord.
Matty Beniers is another young player who could play a major role in their success, while Vince Dunn brings athleticism and offensive ability to the blue line.
I think this team has the pieces to make some noise in the Pacific if everything comes together. However, they need to find consistency and develop better chemistry across the lineup.
Right now, I still think Seattle has some work to do before I can confidently put them among the division’s top contenders.
Calgary Flames Pts 77
The Calgary Flames are another difficult team to evaluate. They’re a younger organization in transition, but they still have veteran talent, including Jonathan Huberdeau.
For Calgary, I think this season should be about developing its young players and figuring out which pieces will be part of the team’s long-term future.
If the young talent continues to progress and the organization stays patient with its rebuild, I could see the Flames putting themselves in a position to compete in the next two to three years.
Vancouver Canucks Pts 76
I don’t think Vancouver will be as bad as everybody expects.
The Canucks received a promising return in the Quinn Hughes trade with Minnesota, and I think there are reasons for optimism if the team sticks to its plan.
Marco Rossi’s health will be important, and Brock Boeser will need to continue producing offensively.
Vancouver may have some challenges in the short term, but I think the pieces are there to build a competitive team if everything comes together. The key will be giving this group time to develop and allowing the new pieces to find their roles.
Final Thoughts
The Pacific Division has an interesting mix of established superstars, teams looking to make a serious playoff push, and young organizations trying to build something special.
Edmonton and Vegas have the star power to lead the way, while Anaheim and Los Angeles could make things interesting. Meanwhile, San Jose, Seattle, Calgary, and Vancouver all have questions to answer as the season progresses.
The Pacific should be an interesting division to watch, and I’m excited to see how these teams stack up.
What do you think? Who wins the Pacific Division this season, and which team am I sleeping on?
Let me know in the comments, and stay tuned for more Sports and Coffee! ☕🏒
